I’ve been getting into the PHP/MySQL combo and am really enjoying it. I created this thing that is kind of a twitter for stocks. The idea being that if you buy or sell a stock then you probably have a good reason, so why not post it? It then does interesting things like finds which stocks have more buys and sells and it takes key words from people’s posts and uses them as tags so you can see that people who, for example, bought Apple (AAPL) tend to list “iPhone” as a reason for their purchase.

It is not yet fully functional; all posts are, at the moment, anonymous. So there’s no logging in or following other people, etc. etc. That’s a possible future addition for sure.

Graveyard Fields: a favorite of the Blueridge Parkway. Kind of a magical spot with wide, open spaces in an area normally packed with trees. There is not much dirt between the sky and solid rock and this depth is cut right to the quick by a stream running through the park which rolls into waterfalls and swimming holes.

We’ve had out eyes out for a new band name for a while. Though the sentiment behind “Coverhogs” is good (one who steals covers from another) people thought we were a cover band or had something to do with Harleys. It’s important to me to have an ourname.com, and when I found that graveyardfields.com was not taken that was that.

We are now, and will be, Graveyard Fields.

Last night was the online marketing forum at the Local 506 and I (unfortunately?) got there for the second half–the Q&A. “Hi, I have a band from Raleigh called ‘Master Codpiece’ and we appeal to no one. Is there a way I can use the internet to help expand our fanbase?” Except the questions were even more inane.

So then, a few drinks later and back at home, I realize that my friend Wendy’s band, Felix Obelix, has no website! She’s one of the most market-strategy minded people I know, so I knew something must be wrong. It must be some sort of weird experience she had with a domain name server that is making her gunshy to register her own dot com. Rather than waiting for the therapy to take effect I decide to register the name and make the website for her. Here’s the result:

Felix Obelix: Melodrama Pop in 7/8!

It’s been a few years in the making and is now ready for the prime-time: iQcuties the social network for people of above average intelligence. For the past two-and-a-half years it has been nothing but a test and a place-holder blog. The turning point was on December 15th when the BuddyPress software was released. BuddyPress is a set of extensions for WordPressMU which, to sum up, makes it easy for just about anyone with intro-level web admin skills to make a social network site.

Anyhow, I won’t blah blah blah at you all, but the site is up, all those who passed the test got invites and things are humming along. Aside from some minor glitches everything seems to be moving smoothly…. (knocking on wood) Here’s to hoping that it, like a good fire, has enough sparks to catch.

Develop for the iPhone? Why when I can make more wikis? I just put up Free Stuff Wiki, and change your life it just may not. The idea is that there are a lot of free promotions on the web and if you find out about one, you can put it on this site. The pages I’m adding to the site are not revolutionary or anything that you couldn’t find with two or three keywords on Google, but as it is my experience with wikis, you can’t start with a blank canvas. People gotta have something to work with!

I’m thinking of starting a new blog category: new websites I’m making that I may or may not see through to maturity.

Free Stuff Wiki though has a lot going for it right from the start. Meredith made a good point that in these times of economic uncertainty people are probably going to be searching the web for more free things. Though Google Trends looks like it disagrees with that, it shows that people are really interested in spending nothing on gifts for the holiday season. Nothing says love like something free from the internet, right?
