Oh my god I am baffled like in every way about this movie. The details defy reality How did a car crash right into Micky Rourke when he was wearing barely any armor and he didn’t even move? All those flames didn’t even tousle his stringy hair. How is his laser whip splitting cars in half but it’s not doing the same to a metal iron man costume? Hey, how the fuck did Micky Rourke even make one of those generators? In the first movie they made a huge deal about how super rare palladium is and now this Russian alcoholic with ridiculously hubcap-like fingernails can get his hands on it? How does changing your Iron Man battery suddenly suck out all of the toxicity in your blood? What the fuck was the whole discovering the new atom sequence? Why are “tousle” and “tussle” not the same word? Or, if it makes sense that they’re different words, then why aren’t they more different? Was the world in the model made by the guy from Mad Men like a scale model of the world and that’s how it had all of the data about roads and shit on it that Robert Downey Jr. could work through like some fucking puzzle? Hey, guy from Mad Men, just put dots on the globe where the protons go. Yeah. It’s a fucking train model. No one will notice those dots. And didn’t S.H.I.E.L.D. take Tony Stark to some remote island? How did he drive off of it? Why was that very train model still in Tony Stark’s office? How the fuck does that make any sense? Why did that desk toy start floating in front of Robert Downey Jr.’s face and hover in front of the movie screen? Why didn’t Jon Favreau just cast himself as Iron Man if he wanted so much screen time? Was the climax of the movie really “crossing the streams”? Seriously? Why was for the second half of the movie everyone talking in slow motion? Oh, god, here’s one for you: You spend ridiculous amounts of time, money and resources to make a near impenetrable suit of armor for yourself but then you spend half of the fucking movie with your FUCKING FACE MASK UP??? Oh Jesus Christ I don’t care that there are famous actors in there! Please just put your fucking face mask down you’re making me nervous. So we sit through the r-i-d-i-c-u-l-o-u-s-l-y long credits to see the teaser at the end and, spoiler but not really, they show us a hammer stuck in the ground. Yeah. That was worth it. Yes, I know it was Thor. I know. But does anyone outside of the 1970’s give a shit about Thor? Does anyone else have the feeling that this Avengers movie that they’ve been building up forever is going to be the most ridiculously bad thing viewable on a screen?

Here are some scattered thoughts on the less-than-week-old device:

I’m sorry, the way I (and, probably, you) use the internet – it’s so much better on a large screen with keyboard access. iPad is much better than the iPhone for browsing, but I don’t think it beats a desktop.

one thing I can do on it that I cannot on any other computing device: play piano. Here multi touch + large screen really shines.

The iPhone version of PvZ is so much more playable on the iPad. I don’t think I’m going to upgrade to HD as the LD (?) version is just peachy.

The iBooks app is nice, but I’m looking for a white text on black background option. Is that there and I’m not seeing it?

I, like the rest of the iPad world, bought pages. And I, like the rest of the world, got really bored and frustrated really quickly which brings me to:

Typing is kind of a nightmare. I miss the iPhone feature which shows you the letter you are typing before you release the key. The screen is really just the wrong size for typing — to small for standard, two hands, two large for thumbs. And how the hell do you hold it when you type? It just doesn’t work in my lap. Bad angle. On the desk it’s an odd angle as well.

Watching movies with your lady friend in bed on the iPad sounds romantic, but it is largely impractical. It’s tough to hold at a good angle for two people and the speakers, though loud, are not really loud enough.

The Dragon dictation app is much better than the iPhone version. Plus, for some reason, I can talk to my iPad with a lot more fluidity than to my phone.

I’ve only played one game of Scrabble, but I think it could be pretty cool with some revisions. I don’t think they used screen real estate properly, though. The board should be as big as it possibly could be and all other elements should go in the left column.

That toy app “Bubbles” for iPhone? Totally awesome on iPad.

The accelerometer seems to be a lot more accurate. I’m having a lot easier time steering in Cro Mag Rally and Monkeyball.

Minim, as expected, is a lot easier to manipulate. So is MazeFinger+.

I’m looking forward to an iPad version of the Facebook app. I actually prefer that site’s apps to their web interface.

I’m also looking forward to an iPad version of Google Reader. Right now the mobile version doesn’t use the screen size properly and, well, same for the regular desktop version (though the desktop version comes really, really close).

Gmail is awesome. It’s better than the Apple mail client (which, of course, you cannot delete). I use the Apple email client just to tell me when I have new emails then open Gmail to read them.

The videos app takes one too many clicks (points? touches?) to play a video. 1) open app and see thumbnails of videos. 2) touch thumbnail to play video. That’s all you need. What’s this inbetween step of seeing a larger screenshot along with movie info? Play the damn movie!

People describing this as “magic” are being pretty hyperbolic. It felt like magic with the iPhone because, well, I’ve never touched a screen and had it respond. It’s cool having a larger screen, but if you’ve used an iPhone or iPod touch, you can imagine pretty well what you’re getting.

I found a lot of Corey Doctorow’s latest book awkward. An awkward all over kind of feel. I think I’m going to use this word more than I should. Perhaps awkwardly more?

Some of this awkwardness, I’m sure, was intended as it is written from the perspective of a 17yo, so there’s a lot of awkwardness all around. Then again, some of the awkwardness really hits when you can almost hear the brain of a thirty-something trying to put words in a millennial’s mouth.

Some of the plot holes were a bit annoying. At one point there is a “crucial” photo on a phone that this kid needs to get to a reporter. Personally, I’d think that the video of the in-book Karl Rove spilling the beans is more crucial, but let’s go with the premise for a bit. The picture on this phone is important and it, for some reason, needs to be hand delivered to a reporter. I’ve got to ask: is email just not an option? Back to the video for a bit; did he really need to give the reporter his log/pass to get it? Again, could this kid not upload it to a host and email a link? For a book about how technology can be used to disrupt systems, there was a little more sneaker-net used for awkward plot device.

Of course, the book is under a Creative Commons license, so it’s “remixable” (another awkward appropriation) which means that if I really didn’t like the story all that much well, why don’t I change it? I’m sorry, but no. I may add salt to a meal, but I’m not about to bust out my own personal wok. The typos were a bit distracting as well.

Props though to Corey for finding a sponsor for each chapter. I’ve never seen that before for a free book. These short ads began each chapter they were written with such a genuine Paul Harvey tone that they were often as entertaining as the story. Of course, if I were a sponsor, I’d want to a pay a lot less for the ads in the ending chapters. After reading the first few “this chapter is dedicated to…” bits the joke gets kind of old and you find yourself skipping past the italics.

The story? The story had some real points. The endorsement by the guy over at Black Hat SEO is what prompted me to download it (using the pretty cool but somewhat buggy Stanza iPhone app). It’s another “big brother could be here and now if we’re not careful.” All in all it’s a nice read. Once you get past the awkwardness.
